Industrial Electrification Assessment Framework

Industrial Electrification

The Industrial Electrification Assessment Framework, published in April 2025 by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), serves as a comprehensive guide for industrial facilities aiming to transition from fossil fuel-based systems to electric-powered technologies. This initiative is part of the DOE’s Better Buildings, Better Plants program and supports the Better Climate Challenge.

Purpose and Scope

The framework is designed to assist industrial organizations in systematically assessing and implementing electrification strategies. It outlines a structured approach to:

  • Evaluate current energy usage and identify opportunities for electrification.
  • Assess the readiness of existing electrical infrastructure.
  • Prioritize electrification projects based on feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and potential benefits.
  • Implement selected projects with consideration of operational and financial factors.

Key Components

The framework is organized into several key sections:

1

Establish Inventory and Energy Use:

Develop a comprehensive inventory of existing equipment and processes, along with their energy consumption profiles.
2

Identify Strategies for Electrification:

Explore potential electrification technologies and approaches suitable for specific processes.
3

Assess Electric Infrastructure Readiness:

Evaluate the capacity and condition of the facility’s electrical systems to support new electric loads.
4

Evaluate and Prioritize Projects:

Analyze potential projects using criteria such as cost, energy savings, emissions reduction, and alignment with organizational goals.
5

Project Implementation:

Plan and execute selected projects, including considerations for procurement, installation, commissioning, and staff training.

Supporting Tools and Resources

To facilitate the assessment and implementation process, the framework includes several appendices with practical tools:

  • DOE Calculators for Electrification: Tools to estimate energy savings and financial impacts.
  • Electrification Inventory Template: A structured format for documenting equipment and energy use.
  • Electrification Readiness Worksheet: A checklist to assess infrastructure capabilities.
  • Guide for Reviewing Single-Line Wiring Diagrams: Instructions for analyzing electrical schematics. ACEEE
  • Utility Bill Analysis: Methods for evaluating historical energy costs and usage patterns.
  • Components of a Facility’s Electric Infrastructure: Descriptions of key electrical system elements.

Inventory, Strategize, Assess, Prioritize, Implement.
