Imperion conducted a comprehensive performance assessment of the cogeneration system at a Regional Medical Center in Kern County, CA, and delivered a clear roadmap to maximize the value of the facility’s existing energy infrastructure.

The Medical Center operates a combined heat and power (CHP) system featuring two natural gas-fired reciprocating engine generators, waste heat recovery, and an absorption chiller that is integrated with the facility’s central chilled water plant. The system is designed to improve energy reliability and reduce utility costs by generating electricity onsite while recovering waste heat for beneficial use.

Imperion’s assessment included a detailed review of electricity generation, natural gas consumption, utility billing data, equipment operation, waste heat recovery performance, and electricity offset — providing a thorough picture of both current operations and untapped potential. The analysis quantified the financial impacts of existing operations and identified targeted opportunities to maximize system value.

Imperion’s findings demonstrated that restoring full generator operation and maximizing waste-heat recovery through the absorption chiller could substantially reduce grid electricity purchases, improve overall system efficiency, and generate significant annual utility cost savings — giving the Medical Center a clear, actionable path to maximize the return on investment from its existing energy infrastructure.
